This week I'm away celebrating the holiday by setting off to a faraway location, ending up somewhere else entirely, claiming that place for myself regardless of the people already living there. (actually, I'm just visiting my mom.)

In my stead, we will be re-broadcasting the episode from October 13, 2018, which was an unboxing of sorts of a recent record store binge in Portland ME, along with an RIP to baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett.

Since the Somerville Media Center is closed for the weekend, today we are presenting a rewebcast of the episode from September 8, 2018. I'm sure you're all nostalgic for 51 weeks ago. Jim Mattis was Secretary of Defense. Drake topped the Billboard charts. Hurricane Florence was making its way towards the Carolinas

Meanwhile, Unpopular Music mourned Randy Weston and Khaira Arby, presented "a jazzy-yet -haunting piece from between-wars Germany", some afro-jazz, some swinging library music, a few, let's say, "jazz-aware" classical pieces, and more.

I'm away this weekend for the holiday, so today we present the episode from January 7, 2017 which had been meant to have been rebroadcast on January 12, 2019.

As I said on both occasions, it features a "raucous first hour, [and a] contemplative, yet not, somnambulant second hour." Having not re-listened to the program since I chose it as a rerun, I've forgotten what I meant by that. I guess I'll have to listen in, too.

Oops, it was actually the episode from January 20, 2018. I don't know where I came up with that phony information.

I'm still out of town for the Holidays, so to close out Unpopular Music for 2018, we are repeating the program which closed out 2017.

Feel free to ignore any references to the weather, as today is about 40° warmer than last December 30. The tunes are still hot though. This was program came mostly from the BFR library, which is rare for me, mostly jazzy and upbeat, with a too on the nose ending.

What with the Somerville Media Center being closed this weekend for some reason, I've decided to go off and visit my family. There fore today we are presenting a repeat of the August 4, 2018 episode.
This featured a couple of long contemplative pieces from Lee Morgan and Charles Lloyd, a few jazz (or at least jazzy) interpretations of popular songs (or at least "pop" songs) therefore rendering them unpopular.

Today is the third and last of some personal obligations keeping me away from the Somerville Media Center. Today we are successfully rebroadcasting the episode from May 2, 2015.

Recorded on a beautiful spring day, rather than a promising early fall day, with open studios, rather than Honk! getting people out. (that's not where I am by the way, not that you were wondering)

As I've said before, it's a good variety show episode, and one of the first to get much attention on Mixcloud. It starts out jazzy, and then goes through a Latin phase and a somewhat mellow section in the second hour. I think you'll enjoy.

I am fairly certain that this week, in place of a new live broadcast, we will present a classic episode from May 2, 2015. Nope it was August 1, ,2015. Not sure how that happened. Will the third time be the charm.

The Somerville Media Center is closed for the Labor Day Weekend, so in lieu of live webcast, we are rebroadcasting the episode from October 21, 2017. At the time I described it as "a somewhat arbitrary assortment of jazz, afro-pop, electronic, film music and a contemporary classical extravaganza."

This was a pretty eclectic program with every thing from usual suspects like Monk and Coltrane to some Janáček from the then recently departed Ivan Moravec to some film noir music to a bunch of pop songs to a jazz cover of Led Zeppelin.

If you recall (and I'm sure you do), I was feeling a bit lazy and uninspired, partly because of the hot weather of that week, which, after this week's clock melting weather, I would surely laugh at now.

 Um, hello.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I missed last week's program because I was in the emergency room. The June 24, 2017 episode was played instead.

I'll have to miss this week's program as I am recovering from surgery (nothing too bad, I assure.) The October 31, 2015 will be rebroadcast. Of course I hesitated a bit before choosing it, but as I recall, there aren't too many actual Hallowe'en references, otherwise there were some interesting selections on order. Plus, I like messing with people's senses of time.

I'm putting myself at 50/50 for next week. Watch this space.

As I am out of town this weekend, there will be no new Unpopular Music webcast, but instead a rerun of the January 21, 2017 episode. This episode actually reached the charts on Mixcloud, in the "alternative music" category, which seems fitting since even though I always use the "alternative music" tag as tongue-in-cheek irony, a radio program featuring two versions of Moon River is not particularly common.

We are out of town this weekend, so in place of a live webcaast, we have programmed to rerun the Thelonious Monk 100th Anniversary program in its stead.

I am a bit proud of this show, and have playing been tracks that didn't make the final cut (or had forgotten to include) ever since. Hopefully now I can shut up about it, and move on from it towards new triumphs the will deserve the royal we as well.

Today, as the Somerville Media Center is closed for the holiday weekend, and as I am away still digesting my Thanksgiving leftovers (not pictured), we will be rebroadcasting the Unpopular Music webcast from June 3, 2017.

It one which should delight lovers of all manifestations of the Terpsichorean muse, from Bach to Björk, passing through several flavors of jazz, some film music from Bernard Herrmann, some neo-Gamelan, Brian Eno and tributes to the then recently departed Misha Mengelberg and Allan Holdsworth. The second set is one of my favorite creations. Enjoy.
