Playlist and more, after the break...
While listening to the show in the studio, I read a few articles online about "Ode to Billy Joe", and found frustrating the irritation people get about the song's lack of specificity. To me, obviously, the vagueness is what makes the song great. Do we really want a work of art (music, fiction, painting, poetry, what have you) to tell us everything. Why would we go back? Trying to figure out what happened is the listener's job. There's enough there for you to build your own tale (Roger Ebert's review of the movie where someone tried to fill in the blanks for you begins "Now that I know why Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge, I almost wish I didn't."), to have your own mysterious object thrown from the bridge (although I think it's pretty obvious, but it's something that people don't like to discuss, especially in 1967, let alone now). This is just a pop song, albeit a great one, but it fulfills an obligation of great art that only the fiercest snob would deny.
