So here's my deal on when Ornette Coleman plays instruments other than the saxophone, of which he is a master - Ornette was not formally trained on either violin or trumpet. When he plays violin, which he played left handed, he would often come up with things that a "normal" violin player never would, which were often intuitively musical and quite interesting. When he plays the trumpet, ...well, he usually just sounds like someone who doesn't play the trumpet very well. (If you want a really harsh assessment, ask Miles Davis.)
